RYA Day Skipper theory offers a comprehensive introduction to cruising for new or inexperienced skippers and crew, and those wanting to refresh their skills. It’s a highly informative course with many interactive exercises and lots of chances to try out what you’ve learned.

Ability after course

Knowledge of chartwork, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship to participate on a Day Skipper practical sailing course

No prior seagoing experience, although we would advise all students to have completed an RYA Competent Crew course.

Adequate english level.

 

If you choose the online course option you must have access to a PC, Mac or tablet

We believe in making the “theory” as practical as possible. The course covers:

  1. the basics of seamanship
  2. the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
  3. chartwork
  4. electronic charts
  5. position fixing
  6. plotting a course to steer
  7. weather forecasting and meteorology
  8. tides
  9. collision regulations
  10. construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
  11. emergency and safety procedures including distress calls,use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts
