RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship theory offers a comprehensive introduction to cruising for new or inexperienced skippers and crew, and those wanting to refresh their skills.

It’s a highly informative course with many interactive exercises and lots of chances to try out what you’ve learned.

Online or Classroom theory course

Online option: 14hrs in your own time, at your own pace

Classroom option: Saturday to Sunday 0900 to 1700
Maximum Student to Instructor Ratio 6:1

Ability after course

Knowledge of chartwork, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship to participate on a practical sailing course

No prior seagoing experience, although we would advise all students to have completed an RYA Competent Crew course.

 

Read the RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship handbook/e-book, (included in your course fee)

 

Adequate english level.

 

If you choose the online course option you must have access to a PC, Mac or tablet

We believe in making the “theory” as practical as possible. The course covers:

 

  1. the basics of seamanship
  2. the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
  3. chartwork
  4. electronic charts
  5. position fixing
  6. plotting a course to steer
  7. weather forecasting and meteorology
  8. tides
  9. collision regulations
  10. construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
  11. emergency and safety procedures including distress calls,use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts
